Our practice

We’re a dynamic practice of over 180 staff with offices in London and Manchester, working with the UK’s leading developers and architects.

Our proactive approach, dedicated innovation studio HTS+, and culture of continuous learning means we never stop pushing the boundaries of not only what’s possible, but the best thing to do.

Community and social value

We’re committed to making a positive impact on society and the environment and using our resources to better the lives of others.

We work with local schools and colleges, offering talks and mentoring to help engage more students in STEM subjects, as well as partnering on social mobility programmes with organisations like Firm Foundations and Beyond the Box.

We have a programme of undertaking community and charitable projects, which have included: Steel Warriors, Brixton Windmill, Herne Hill Velodrome and Horatio’s Garden.

Equality, diversity and inclusion

Our practice is run in an ethical and fair way, with employees, colleagues and clients treated honestly and fairly.

We offer programs to support different routes into the industry including mentorship, apprenticeships and internships for individuals from underrepresented groups.

Our internal Diversity & Inclusion group organises training and events throughout the year, as well as conducting an annual EDI survey to ensure we’re continuing to create the conditions in which everyone can do their best.

Employee ownership trust

Heyne Tillett Steel has been an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) since April 2021. The move reflects the core values of the practice and acknowledges the commitment and investment of our people to its success.

Alongside the Directors, a Trust Board oversees the strategic direction of the practice and an Employee Council, made up of staff from all levels and disciplines, enables employees to have a more active role in the direction of the practice.

Sustainable practices

We strive to minimise our environmental footprint in our practice as well as through our designs. We enjoy daily cooked vegetarian lunches, prepared with locally sourced ingredients where possible, encourage active travel through cycling schemes and use 100% renewable energy to power our London office.

B Corp certified

HTS became a certified B Corporation in 2023 , joining a global community of businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. Being B Corp certified means that we’re legally committed to considering the interests of all stakeholders in our business operations: employees, customers, communities and the environment. In short; to using our business as a force for good.

Continuous learning

Bringing fresh ideas and innovation to every project relies on continuous learning and knowledge-sharing.

Internally, we host technical lunch sessions twice a week as well as bimonthly assemblies on emerging issues. Focus groups meet regularly and act as knowledge centres and sounding boards on specialist subjects.

We also offer external CPD sessions and take an active role in industrywide initiatives like the Engineers Reuse Collective, UKGBC, LETI and Structural and Civil Engineers Declare.

Adventure and fun

We enjoy engineering and the business of design, continuing the spirit of adventure with which the practice was founded in 2007.

Our enthusiasm for a challenge extends beyond our projects; whether it’s climbing a mountain, performing with the HTS band or volunteering at a local community garden.

The result is a practice that’s fun and rewarding to be part of, and a team that’s enjoyable to work with.
