Total
Engineering

Our engineers share an enthusiasm for designing innovative, elegant and sustainable solutions to complex engineering problems. We’re a multi-disciplinary practice, working as an integrated team to provide the right expertise, at the right moment, for every project.

‘Total engineering’ is central to our approach; taking a holistic view of design and construction, including temporary works, we anticipate challenges and deliver solutions that reduce costs, programme length and embodied carbon.

Our in-depth knowledge of UK construction past and present – and of London in particular – ensures that every project benefits from thorough understanding and analysis. This enables our clients to make confident, informed commercial and design decisions at crucial early stages.

We pioneer the use of structural materials in new and better ways; leading the way in steel reuse, devising new types of hybrid structure and delivering mass timber at an unprecedented scale in the UK.

Whether it’s an all-new building or a new era of one that already exists, we apply the same ‘long life, loose fit’ philosophy; reuse as much as possible, through retained structure and reclaimed materials, and reduce embodied carbon through lean and flexible design.

Our established civil engineering team works in an integrated way across the practice, providing comprehensive urban engineering advice on drainage, public realm, transport and highways to de-risk and inform design decisions that minimise a project’s cost, carbon and impact on surroundings.

From advice on large scale masterplans to public realm interventions and the spaces between buildings, we create places and spaces for people to use and enjoy.

We proactively address site constraints and create effective movement and drainage strategies which minimise engineered intervention, working closely with statutory bodies to mitigate potential stumbling blocks at boundaries and interface points.

Expertise

Drainage and flood risk

Innovative SuDS strategies, below ground drainage, flood risk assessment and utilities coordination

Masterplanning and public realm

Civil engineering for masterplans and large estates, involving cut-and-fill analysis and level design, public realm and external works

Transport planning and highways

Transport planning and detailed highways design ensuring that the early-stage proposals are fully considered and successfully implemented

Our in-house geotechnical engineers work collaboratively with our structural teams to produce low-impact ground engineering solutions, advising on the reuse and efficient design of foundations as well as assessments of subterranean constraints and the potential impacts of a development.

Working on some of London’s most complex geotechnical developments, our geotechnical engineers bring a wealth of below-ground knowledge and experience to the benefit of all HTS projects, from sense-checks and desktop studies to full substructure design and works packages.

With in-house geotechnical expertise, our project teams work in a more agile, holistic way towards a shared goal, leading to better design outcomes overall for the project. This not only reduces risk and uncertainty, but delivers savings in cost, programme and embodied carbon.

Expertise

Preliminary substructure design

Foundation and retaining wall designs, including appraisals of ground conditions and options for improvement

Foundation reuse

Assessing the capacity of existing foundations and exploring design options to maximise their reuse

Ground movement assessments

A range of specialist assessments to establish below-ground constraints, impacts and interactions and advise on risk mitigation strategies
