Client Battersea Arts Centre
Architect Haworth Tompkins
Status Complete (2018)
GIA 1,975m²

Key features

Phased programme and sequencing works

The arts centre remained open throughout the refurbishment, requiring early detailed phasing and collaborative sequencing works.

Temporary works following fire damage

A fire broke out in March 2015, causing the roof to collapse and damage to the brickwork throughout the Grand Hall. We designed the temporary works to stabilise the building so that it could be repaired safely

Additional storey added

An additional storey containing office space was inserted within the roof trusses, with a new lift shaft added in the remodelled courtyard.

New roof trusses accommodating modern technology

New roof trusses were designed to accommodate modern theatre tech and access requirements, in addition to heavy acoustic build-up.

Elastomeric bearings incorporated within truss bearing

Elastomeric bearings within truss bearing limit loads on brickwork buttresses, justifying additional loads without strengthening to the existing structure.
