Collaborative net-zero life science research and design report published

Innovation in Science Buildings: The Path to Net Zero; a new report exploring the design of high-quality, net-zero life science spaces to support an industry key to the growth of the UK economy, launched at UKREiiF 2024.

A research collaboration between Heyne Tillett Steel, Bennetts Associates, Turner & Townsend Alinea and Hoare Lea, the pioneering net-zero life sciences research and design report shares best practice design solutions to significantly reduce the carbon intensive environmental impact of life sciences buildings now, and in the future.

Report launch at UKREiiF

To mark the launch of the report, the research team hosted an industry panel at UKREiiF 2024, chaired by Emily Slupek, Partner (Project Management) at Bidwells. HTS Director Susan Mantle was joined by Simon Erridge, Director at Bennetts Associates, Hamish Summers, Director at T&T Alinea, and Kostas Milonidis, Associate Director at Hoare Lea.

Using cross-industry knowledge, the new research presents a comprehensive net-zero prototype of a typical speculative lab building. This prototype demonstrates how every aspect of design can be optimised, focusing initially on embodied carbon emissions and subsequently on operational energy performance. The report provides critical guidance on the implications of design choices throughout the building’s lifecycle.
