Low carbon mode

The ACDG, short for the Accelerating Concrete Decarbonisation Group, is a developer-led group of businesses and people within the built environment looking to drive down the carbon emissions of concrete through real-time prototyping and testing.

In the video below, we spoke to just a few of the key representatives and collaborators of the group as the prototypes were being built on site:

  • Benjamin Lesser, Head of Design + Innovation, Derwent London
  • Samantha Carlsson, Senior Sustainability Manager, Derwent London
  • Laura Batty, Research and Innovation at HTS+, Heyne Tillett Steel
  • Teresa Martín Garrido, Senior Project Manager, Kilnbridge

They tell us what the ACDG is, why we need it, the challenges they’re up against and their hopes for the future of the group.

Full collaborator list:

  • Derwent London, Heyne Tillett Steel, British Land, The Crown Estate, GPE, Grosvenor, Imperial College London, Landsec, Lendlease, Related Argent, Stanhope PLC, BAM UK & Ireland, Bowmer and Kirkland Ltd, Kier Group, Byrne Bros (Formwork), Deconstruct (UK) Ltd, Getjar, Morrisroe, Kilnbridge, McGee, McLaren Construction Group, Multiplex, John Sisk & Son Ltd, Skanska, Wates Group, Charles Russell Speechlys, AKT II, Arup, Buro Happold, Elliott Wood, Ramboll, WSP, Ben Azoula-Victory

“The difference in the ACDG’s approach is its focus on practicality rather than theory. The objective is not simply to prove that lower-carbon concrete can work, but to create an evidence base that enables its adoption on live commercial projects.

What has been so encouraging is the level of collaboration this has involved, with multiple developers, contractors and structural engineers working together towards a common goal.”
