Key features

New 5 storey superstructure

Exposed concrete frame and slabs achieve a response factor of <1 for the lab areas, with two floors of lightweight steel frame above for patient accommodation.

12m basement

Extensive ground modelling enabled us to justify the new basement with large rotary bored piling chosen to reduce noise and vibration.

Drainage integration

A new groundwater drainage system maintains the existing hydrogeology whilst ensuring water is diverted around the excavation to prevent damming in the new basement.

Live geotechnical monitoring

Intensive live monitoring with A Squared ensured the preservation of the Grade I listed St Stephens church, and an MRI suite in an adjacent hospital building during construction.

BREEAM Excellent rated

Designed to respond sensitively to the surrounding landscape.

“This project is about looking ahead to the future of healthcare and better ways of treating diseases and conditions that affect people in our local community, as well as others around the UK and the rest of the world.”

Chris Burghes, Chief Executive, Royal Free Hospital Charity
