Cromwell Place
A unique concept which connects and converts five Grade II-listed terraces dating from the 1850s into a co-working concept for art galleries, with a new contrasting modern pavilion inserted in the rear courtyard.
Key features
Large, column-free gallery space
A carefully detailed lightweight steel frame, intricately clad to form a bespoke profile, enables 140m² of column-free gallery space.
A geometric fifth elevation
The new contemporary, bespoke art pavilion is overlooked from all angles, with the saw-tooth profile effectively becoming the fifth elevation of the building.
Double-level basement adjacent to listed buildings
Beneath the pavilion, a double-level basement is formed in reinforced concrete, using contiguous piled walls to limit movement to the listed buildings on a complex site.
Integrating modern technology
A secure, international-standard climate-controlled storage facility, administrative areas, and private viewing rooms were incorporated into the heritage buildings.
Refurbishing existing heritage buildings
The existing closet wings of 2 and 4 Cromwell Place provide new circulation routes, with glazed bridges linking the wings and providing views onto the sculptural gallery roof.
