GGBS, a by-product of steelmaking, is used as a cement replacement to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete. It is a globally traded commodity with limited availability, meeting only 10% of global cement demand. The UK imports over half of its GGBS, mainly from the EU and Japan. As global demand for low-carbon materials grows, GGBS supply may tighten, especially as exporting countries prioritise their own needs.
HTS is addressing this issue by proposing a limit on GGBS use to 25% in line with RICS guidelines, aiming for a 20% average across projects. We plan to use alternative cement replacements and advocate for demand reduction and flexible concrete specifications to manage the carbon impact of reduced GGBS availability.
