•How we made it: Holborn Viaduct
This is Holborn Viaduct.
In our latest film, Associate Director James Mumford and Founding Director Tom Steel talk about the new commercial office building, which, on the face of it, seems fairly typical structurally. However, a major effort was made across the project team to meet the client’s sustainability targets in multiple areas.
Piles from buildings previously on the site were reused in the foundation design, saving embodied carbon. Further reductions were achieved through steelwork selection, including the sourcing of 87 tonnes of reused steel and the optimisation and use of Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steel.
The building is constrained and bounded by the listed Victorian Holborn Viaduct on one side and the Thameslink station and railway line to the other, as well as a host of subterranean infrastructure. Through close collaboration with our client Royal London Asset Management, as well as PLP Architecture and contractors Multiplex, we’re delivering 410,000ft2 of office space spread over 14 stories, with a double storey basement underneath.
In doing so we’ve delivered a large scale, high quality office building in traditional materials with a modern twist.
