1415 - Institute of Immunity and Transplantation: Pears Building
Islington
Delivering a new state of the art centre for research excellence, the Pears Building at London’s Royal Free Hospital comprises world-class laboratory space and adaptable, high-quality facilities for patients and public visitors.
Key features
- The new 12m deep basement is located within a particularly difficult and sensitive sloping site, which has required extensive ground modelling to justify the new basement will not adversely affect adjacent buildings including a Grade I listed church.
- Construction of a new exposed concrete framed structure over five storeys, and a two-storey steel frame on top, to replace the existing two storey carpark structure
- Integration of innovative SuDS strategies into the construction sequence
- Close collaboration with geotechnical specialists A-Squared to ensure the design has minimal impact to surrounding property by ensuring a maximum damage category of zero on the Burland Scale
- Strict vibration criteria for the laboratory space
- The project has been designed to respond sensitively to the surrounding landscape and aims to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating
