Planning granted for Alkerden Academy

We’re excited to announce that planning permission has been granted for our Alkerden CoE Academy education campus in Whitecliffe.

Designed with Lee Evans Partnership, the campus comprises a nursery, primary school, a secondary school and sixth form, as well as a dual-use community sports centre with external sports pitches and associated ancillary facilities for the emerging local community.

The proposed structural designs include a mass timber frame for the primary school with exposed Glulam beams and CLT floors and a hybrid RC and steel frame for the secondary school. 20m long span Glulam beams with CLT panels will form the dramatic roof over the sports hall. The combined schools and associated facilities will occupy an 11.1-hectare site, making it one of Kent’s largest educational facilities.

Commenting on the scheme, planning officers said: ‘The application demonstrates a strong commitment to design quality at every scale… the urban design of the scheme is exemplary, balancing the security and safeguarding needs of a modern school with the ambition to use the buildings to open up visual connections with the community and frame surrounding streets. Care and consideration has also been shown in the environmental performance, with both schools managing to achieve a BREEAM Excellent target rating'

The project is due to complete in the summer of 2023.
