Plans submitted for new £30m landmark building at the University of Winchester

Winchester City Council planning committee are currently evaluating plans submitted by Design Engine Architects for the Winchester University’s West Downs Campus site.

The 7,500m² project consists of three interconnecting buildings housing a triangular entrance pavilion, five levels of teaching space, a library, food hall and auditorium, over a site wide basement. The site further features a 250 seat auditorium, with continuous 20m diameter column free space.

An innovative lightweight truss frame system has been developed forming the social learning space. This creates a column free first floor with spans up to 30m.

An exposed RC flat slab on a 9m by 9m grid will form the super-structure for the 72m long main teaching block, with various overhanging and transfers structures resulting in the ground floor having only two internal columns.

The building is expected to be completed by summer 2019.
