0438 - Southcote Road

Camden

The work involves the construction of two new contemporary triangular houses in an enclosed site in North London. To gain sufficient height the construction is sunken below ground floor level requiring retaining walls to the perimeter boundary. The simple concrete box foundation supports a traditional timber framed super structure which is cost effective and easy to construct with the limited access to site. The timber super-structure allows the triangular geometry and sloping roofs to be created with simple building techniques and no off-site construction.

It has won an RIBA London Regional Award and two awards at the Ideal Homes Show’s Blue Ribbon Awards: Ideal Home of the Year and Housing Architect of the Year. The site is located at the centre of a residential block in North London, surrounded by 23 party walls and accessed via a long narrow passageway.
