International Women's Day - Kelly Harrison

To celebrate International Women’s Day this Sunday we are profiling some of the amazing women in our office.

Kelly Harrison was one of the first employees at Heyne Tillett Steel joining in May 2008. Over the 12 years since she joined Kelly has worked on a wide range of projects and become a passionate advocate of sustainable materials and modern methods of construction, championing the use of engineered timber to improve the quality and speed of construction, reduce carbon emissions and enhance operatives and occupiers’ wellbeing.

As the practice’s Timber Lead Kelly has delivered many of HTS’s largest timber and hybrid projects including the recently completed phases 1-3 of the Republic Masterplan, East India Dock, reinvigorating 1990s RC frames with new Glulam and CLT extensions.  She is now working on what promises be the UK’s largest glulam and CLT framed building at Old Gramophone Works providing 91,000sqft of office space. Kelly also runs our in-house timber focus group which shares knowledge, lessons learnt and develops reference material and tools for efficient timber design and detailing for use across all our timber projects.

Ever since studying Architectural Engineering I’ve always been very design focused, sketching is a big passion and a key way in which I solve problems. At HTS I’ve had the opportunity to work with world-class architects on highly detailed projects, ranging from private houses, to museums, schools and larger commercial developments. Timber is a tactile material and most often exposed, the approach to the structural design needs to reflect this, which really excites me and fuels my love for the job. I’m also passionate about doing our bit for the climate emergency, creating carbon stores in our cities is a great approach, also promoting the engineered timber industry and in doing so giving economic reasons for sustainable reforestation.”
