Work on site is underway and breathing new life into the Herne Hill Velodrome.
The UK’s oldest velodrome and home of track cycling in London for over 120 years, Herne Hill Velodrome is the only remaining venue still in operation from the 1948 Olympic Games. It is where Sir Bradley Wiggins, Britain’s first Tour de France winner, trained as a boy before going on to win the internationally acclaimed race in 2012, and it is continues to give today’s youngsters the opportunity to take part in cycling sessions.
The new design by Hopkins Architects includes a new two-storey pavilion to replace the existing derelict structure. The centrepiece will include changing rooms and coaching facilities as well as covered outdoor seating and a new club room featuring views over the track. The original cast iron columns from the 1890's building are incorporated into a £1.75 million contemporary GLULAM / CLT design.
Herne Hill Velodrome Trust’s aims focus on regenerating the velodrome to create the leading cycling centre in London, catering for all ages and abilities of cyclists and securing its future for generations to come.
