Our Brixton Windmill project, designed with Squires & Partners, is now fully complete and in use by the local community and residents.
The new 154m2 education and community centre sits adjacent to the Grade II* listed windmill, the last remaining tower mill in central London. The project has been funded by Lambeth Council and was initiated by Friends of Windmill Gardens; a charity focused on preserving the building’s rich heritage.
Responding to the surrounding landscape and referencing the site’s original outbuildings, the structure is formed from a low-rise pitched roof and Douglas fir frame with tapered columns. Externally, the building compliments the blackened tone of the windmill with dark weatherboard cladding and mock-slate roof tiling. The structure is book-ended by two gable walls in a black brick to further reference the neighbouring tower. To provide high-levels of natural light, the roof is punctuated with feature skylights while a series of bi fold glazed doors open out directly to the surrounding park area.
The new centre will play a key role in the local community, providing flexible space for school groups and adult education activities as well as activity space for festivals and FoWG open days. Originally built in 1816, the windmill has become a local landmark in south London and the completion of the new community centre has brought public activity back to the site, helping to secure its future as a historic working mill.
The project forms part of our wider social value programme, and all work on the project was undertaken on a pro-bono basis.
